While the most popular pads aren’t necessarily the ones you should buy, our team found that several of the most-discussed and best rated pads really are better than the competition. Don’t think that just because you’ve heard of a brand, you’ll love it - there are large differences between even the well-known brands.

The new line of premium pads from Because Market is definitely the biggest upset of the year, and it changed our rankings around at the last minute. A lot of high-tech stuff is baked into every pad, which is available in three absorbencies. All offer best-in-class absorption and shockingly fast rewet time. The Maximum and Overnight pads are 15% more absorbent than Poise. A comfortable anatomically correct shape and side leak guards keep you dry. They are conveniently individually wrapped for cleanliness and discretion.

These pads have the best reviews on the brand's site, earning an average of 4.8 out of 5 possible stars from thousands of pad users.

Why Because Market pads stands above the rest

According to Because Market's site, they worked with Stanford Hospital’s Department of Urology to develop a best in class product. The ‘secret sauce’ is in the dual-layer absorption core, which captures and holds moisture more quickly and thoroughly than other brands’ pads. In terms of benchmarks, their Overnight pads can absorb 3 cups of liquid in just 19 seconds. (Most pads can only absorb less than one cup, much more slowly.)

To summarize, we picked Because Market's pads because of their comfort and absorption firepower. For people who've had problems with leaks in the past, or want to try an alternative to Poise, these pads are a must-try.

UPDATE: It looks like Because has a free trial program where you can get 20 pads to try if you cover $2.49 shipping. This could be a good deal to take advantage of while they have it.

Last year’s champion, Poise remains an all-around great product, with good comfort, absorbency and a variety of choices. The absorbent core itself is very solid but not quite best-in-class, underperforming the Because Premium Pads for both absorbency and rewet time (how long it takes liquid to absorb) in our lab tests. But it's no slouch in those areas, and the great fit and soft feel make it a great buy, just a little pricey.

Always is a familiar period pad brand, which is why it’s often where women start when looking for urinary incontinence pads. The Always Discreet line offers three different types of incontinence pads with varying amounts of absorbency and come in different lengths. Thinner Always Discreet liners are also available for a smaller flow or less consistent leakage. They’re generally thinner than other brands’ offerings but we experienced some leaks when trying them.

Rounding out the list are pads by Tena. They feature an oval shape that hugs the body to prevent leakage and an Air Dry Layer providing air circulation. Tena focuses on their pads being Ultra-thin and discreet, which is great for comfort and under tighter fitting pants. Their Serenity and Intimates lines both come in a variety of absorbency thicknesses and lengths. Absorbency and leak-protection are stronger with Because Premium Pads and Poise. Tena’s prices also tend to be the highest among other incontinence pads for women.

Prevail has a cloth-like outer fabric for comfort and a good adhesive that keeps the liners in place. The pad is contoured but our reviewers found Because and Poise to be more comfortable.

These pads feature quick-wicking technology that soaks up moisture and leaves you feeling dry, but Because still outperforms on absorbency and re-wet. One plus is the lower price, though with incontinence our experience is that paying a bit more is worth it for a better product.
